- Age is a strange concept.
Age is a strange concept.
What happens when our age doesn't match up with how we feel inside?
We are often defined by our age, whether it's by our physical abilities, our job, or our relationship status. But what happens when our age doesn't match up with how we feel inside?
For me, at 64 years old, my brain tells me I am still 34. I feel young and vibrant, and I am still able to do 60 minutes on a cross trainer and pick up new concepts online every day. But the outside world doesn't always see it that way. Women often don't notice me and men often assume I am senile. It's a strange feeling, to feel one way but be perceived another.
But I am not alone. I keep crossing paths with people who have what I call "tunnel vision." They refuse to consider new ways of doing things because "that's how I've always done it." But why should we limit ourselves in this way? Why not explore new ideas and possibilities, even as we age?
I used to be guilty of this myself. My father used to accuse me of having "9 day wonders," where I would become fascinated by something, research it, and then move on to the next thing. But with the availability of information online, my "9 day wonders" have become "9 minute wonders." And some may see that as a waste of time. But I don't.
When something catches my eye, I research it, save the information, and curate it. How and where I use that information is a question for another day. But the important thing is that a new interest results in a burst of enthusiasm and an escape from the mundane. It allows me to explore new worlds of possibilities, even at 64 years old.
So, to all the people out there who feel like they are invisible or senile, don't let age define you. Don't limit yourself to "that's how I've always done it." Explore new interests, new ideas, and new possibilities. Life is too short to be stuck in a rut. Even at 64, there is still so much to discover and experience.
Here are 5 steps to take to break out of your tunnel vision and start exploring new possibilities:
1. Identify your passions. What are the things that excite you and make you feel alive? Whether it's a hobby or a new skill you want to learn, identifying your passions is the first step to exploring new possibilities.
2. Do your research. With the internet at our fingertips, there is no excuse not to research new interests and ideas. Read articles, watch videos, and find experts in the field to learn from.
3. Take action. Don't just read about your new interests, take action and start exploring them. Sign up for a class, take a workshop, or start a project.
4. Network. Surround yourself with people who share your interests and passions. They can provide valuable support and resources as you explore new possibilities.
5. Keep an open mind. Be open to new ideas and don't be afraid to try something new. Remember, age is just a number and it's never too late to start exploring new possibilities.
Don't let age define you. Keep exploring, keep learning, and keep growing. Life is an adventure and it's never too late to start.
